6<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> September 2024:<\/strong> Isuzu EA Foundation handed over a tree nursery to Green Shine Aberdare Self Help Group in Kiamuturi, Murang\u2019a County. This initiative is part of the organization\u2019s environmental sustainability initiatives which aligns with the organization\u2019s mission to promote sustainable development by prioritizing environmental conservation, road safety, and education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leading the Isuzu EA team were Foundation Director Charles Kariuki, Sustainability, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager Dr. Michael Musyoka, General Manager Production, Eng. James Njoroge, and Communications and CSR Coordinator Linda Njiru. The team was hosted by the community represented by Green Shine Self Help Group Chairman Paul Muraya and Peter Kariuki, the group Secretary, Kiamuturi sub-location Assistant Chief Christopher Muthui Njonjo, Kenya Forest Service Forester, John Maina among other notable guests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kiamuturi Tree Nursery marks a significant step in Isuzu EA’s environmental pillar initiatives. This nursery will produce tree seedlings to support the ongoing afforestation project in Aberdares, which aims to growing 100,000 trees by 2025, ultimately contributing to the government\u2019s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nursery, which is designed to accommodate 13 beds and 52,000 seedlings annually, will reduce seedling costs by 63.7% while ensuring a 95% survival rate. It focuses on indigenous and fruit tree seedlings, with some fruit trees donated to the community to encourage sustainable farming and nourishment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sustainable project supports various objectives: creating livelihood opportunities, addresses water catchment area enhancement, increasing water supply to Nairobi and its surroundings while reducing soil erosion by replacing Tasmanian blue gum trees with bamboo along river riparian zones, thereby improving water quality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The execution of the project was done in four phases by volunteer employees from Isuzu EA Manufacturing team. Collaborating with the community, 271 highly skilled and experienced employees volunteered 2,168 hours to this cause. This is equivalent to the production of 41 FRR or 62 N-series or 47 pickups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The materials used for the construction came from recycled CKD packaging such as reinforced iron sheets and treated timber, thus, leveraging on technology for climate resilience while embracing circular economy practices.  The project also included the installation of pipes from the main water source to supply over 100 households with piped water for the first time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Green Shine Aberdare Secretary, Peter Kariuki highlighted that the fruit trees will assist in land restoration and reduce deforestation driven by commercial logging and tea plantations. Kenya Forest Service Ranger John Maina praised the project, noting the declining water levels of the Aberdare\u2019s three major rivers, which have hindered the progress of water supply projects. 
 
Assistant Chief Christopher Njogu commended the initiative\u2019s role in education, noting that the tree nursery would serve as a practical learning site for students studying agriculture and environmental science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
